Madison County is not a safe place for its citizens. Porky runs the Sheriff Department
The truth is coming out about what happened on the night of September 3, 2026.
The individual who was shot has been identified as James Anthony Gross. He faces two felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and three misdemeanor charges of resisting a public officer. It is unclear whether the alleged deadly weapon refers to his motorcycle, which he was reportedly using to flee. The Madison County Sheriff’s Department discharged 18 rounds during the incident, including shots fired from two AR-15 rifles.
The witnesses claim this :
I just called my daughter and said, ‘There’s a motorcycle going up to your house,’ and she said, ‘Oh no,'” Groves said.
Groves said her daughter later encountered someone inside the home. A short time later, Groves said Sandy Mush Road was filled with law enforcement.
“I came outside, and it was lit up like a Christmas tree out here,” she said.
Groves said she went toward the scene and saw a motorcycle lying along the road. She said she did not recognize it or know who owned it. By the time she arrived, an ambulance was preparing to leave.
“I didn’t see anybody. I just saw the bike and a couple of police, and they told me they got it handled,” Groves said.
Boy, they had it handled alright…
Why was Sheriff Buddy Harwood out of town when this debacle happened, and why did these incompetent Deputies shoot at this man? They had enough time to stage this before the SBI arrived.
Good shots, aren’t they? The only shot that hit this individual ricocheted off the motorcycle. Then these imbeciles charged him, claiming they were under attack. It is priceless.
The weekly update for Madison County continues with a recent incident in the Hot Springs area. Approximately five days ago, a local resident named Tommy, who was reportedly intoxicated, was detained by Madison County Sheriff’s Deputy Joyner. Deputy Joyner then dumped Tommy at the old burnt store on Highway 25-70 near Lonesome Mountain Road, where Tommy was later found deceased. Van Duncan responded to the scene and informed Hot Springs police that the location was outside his jurisdiction. However, Hot Springs police schooled Buddy Harwood’s chief deputy that the incident did fall within their jurisdiction.
The big mystery this week is “where is Sheriff Buddy Harwood?”
So where is the missing great illustrious Sheriff Buddy, our Madison County Porky? Three scenarios are moving through the rumor mill of Peyton Place, Madison County. One is that he is on a religious retreat in Arizona. Two, he is in Arizona picking up where Coy Phillips left off. Three, he is building a church in Mexico.
The real question is: Who, in their right mind, schedules something like this before a major election?
What is Harwood afraid of?
Below is the public records request from Van Duncan about his salary; he is indeed part-time and reported at $66,734 annually. Greg Christopher, the third sheriff, does not appear on this list.
Since Van Duncan is retired, it is important to clarify whether state regulations allow him to earn this amount while receiving retirement benefits. Duncan has also publicly discussed his MS diagnosis. Public figures who seek sympathy for their disabilities by sitting for interviews in the press always get my radar activated.
I don’t trust those who do this; you don’t get a pass because something bad has happened to you. The public shouldn’t excuse behavior just because someone is sick. It would help to confirm whether he is also receiving disability benefits. Transparency about public figures’ compensation and benefits is essential to maintain public trust.
Please review the new payroll records Duncan released, as there are concerns about the accuracy of reported employee salaries in Madison County.
These records do not align with previous county public records requests from one week earlier, which highlights ongoing issues within the Finance Department under Director Kari Ledford and her association with Sheriff Buddy Harwood.
Why cover up the real numbers?
County taxpayers are entitled to transparency regarding the full compensation of county employees.
I have selected five names from the Van Duncan list below and am reporting the discrepancies in their pay compared to one week ago. The names are:
- Buddy Harwood, one of three Sheriffs of Madison: On September 13, 2026, his rate of pay was $85,488. By September 19, 2026, his actual rate was $138,463, an increase of $52,975.
- Cindy Shores-Administrative assistant- September 13, 2026, rate of pay: $49,920; September 19, 2026, real rate: $84,786. A jump of $34,866. No indicator of longevity pay. Maybe this is like the payoff to Van Duncan, who received money from corrupt Wanda Greene years ago and then abruptly retired. Maybe Shores is receiving a bonus for setting up her former live-in Aron Gosnell in the illegal raids and targeting of Vape Shops by the Madison County Sheriff’s Department?
- Daniel Joyner: On September 13, 2026, his rate of pay was $54,468. By September 19, 2026, his actual rate was $91,400, an increase of $36,932. This is the Madison County Deputy who pitched Hot Springs Otis on the side of the road. He was found dead later; Duncan tried to cover it up.
- Avery Clark: On September 13, 2026, his rate of pay was $54,578. By September 19, 2026, his actual rate was $104,397, an increase of $49,819.
- Van Duncan- one of the three sheriffs makes $66,734 in annual salary
Notice below in the PRR that Jeremy Hensley’s son, Chandler Hensley, shows up at the same time Coy Phillips is on the payment roster.
Below is a Hensley’s email to me. Remember, he takes no responsibility for this flagrant, nontransparent misuse of taxpayer money. We the taxpayers deserve the truth.
“Just to let you know, my son is not the one that Coy pointed the gun at. He never worked with Coy. Coy had been gone for a while before my son got hired. The sheriff is an elected official and he can hire who he wants the commissioner have no control over the sheriff office. We only approve his budget and that’s it.”

MARSHALL – As Madison County still seeks funding for its Public Service Complex, County Manager Rod Honeycutt said he’s more confident it will secure its funding than ever before.
But county residents could see a local tax increase if the county doesn’t come up with roughly $30 million in additional money needed for its Public Service Complex. According to Honeycutt, 2 cents of the county’s current 36 cents per $100 valuation rate is devoted to debt services, which would bring a potential tax increase from 7 cents to 5 cents, if no more money were to come in.
Really, Honeycutt has never provided any evidence of the money accumulated. I want to see all the paperwork and fund balances that prove he is telling the truth.
We are supposed to take his word on it. Above, in these Sheriff Salaries, you see a small portion of proof of how this county, through his leadership and the current commissioners, is purposefully covering up the true expenditures in Madison County.
Look at this monstrosity and ask yourselves: Do we need something this big? Rod Honeycutt doesn’t pay taxes in this county and doesn’t care if we get stuck with this shortfall. Of course, Elmer Gantry Michael Garrison was quick to chime in with this statement: “In 10, 15 or 20 years, our names will be forgotten, and history will have passed us by,” Commission Chair Michael Garrison said at an Aug. 7 groundbreaking ceremony.
He added that the building will serve as a memorial, a monument, and testimony to the county’s resilience through Tropical Storm Helene and what it has endured over the years. It has been suggested that he may request a plaque on the front door to honor both his late former girlfriend, who died in the flood, and himself.
It seems to me that Michael Garrison and Rod Honeycutt are building their final tribute to the big-government golden-calf mentality…
Why not just build this? It is as outrageous as the above
Rod Honeycutt is talking about a 5 to 7-cent tax increase, which equals a 14 to 18.5 percent rise in taxes.
Honeycutt is using the Three-card-monty formulation to mislead you. He says this while families in Madison pay 30% more for gas and groceries are doubling.
Instead of increasing the burden on taxpayers, ask departments, especially the sheriff’s office, to reduce their budgets to cover the shortfall.
Or better yet, combine the money you say you have collected. Build a much smaller courthouse and move your administration offices into the current courthouse buildings.
More reason to get out and vote because the 2026 NC ballot includes a constitutional amendment requiring limits on property tax increases by NC local governments. Republican lawmakers think some local governments have gone too far above revenue-neutrality without adequate justification.
So, they’ve put a constitutional amendment to voters. If voters approve the referendum, the amendment would require the legislature to enact laws limiting how much local governments can increase property tax levies. The numbers floated are between 2 and 3.5 percent. For Honeycutt and Madison, this would mean the Madison County commissioners could raise property taxes by only about 1 and 1/2 cents.
If you want to know more about what these candidates think about economic issues in Madison, a forum sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce is coming up. Mark Snelson has refused to participate. He probably did so because, while commissioner, he contributed to too much overspending, especially aimed at his big buddy, Sheriff Harwood.
